Chinese consumers were introduced to the Xiaomi 12S series of smartphones. With the launch of the Xiaomi 12S, Xiaomi 12S Pro, and Xiaomi 12S Ultra, the company has unveiled three new devices in the series. As well to the Xiaomi 12 Pro Dimensity Edition, the seller also introduced the Xiaomi 12 Pro with a larger battery and a different camera module.

Xiaomi announced today a trio of familiar-looking smartphones to mark the launch of its partnership with Leica just six months after the launch of its previous flagship. A massive 1-inch Sony IMX989 main sensor and a 50.3-megapixel resolution top off the 12S Ultra, which features MIUI 13 based on Android 12 and runs Qualcomm’s supposedly more efficient Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor. For improved low-light performance and color accuracy, the pixel size is doubled to 3.2um through pixel binning. Xiaomi 12S Ultra uses its full 1-inch sensor, unlike the Sony Xperia Pro-I.

There are three rear cameras on the Xiaomi 12S Ultra: a 50.3-megapixel main camera (23mm, f/1.9), a 48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera (13mm, f/2.2), and a 48-megapixel periscope camera (120mm, f/4.1). The 48-megapixel cameras are powered by Sony IMX586 sensors and use 1/2-inch sensors. Leica’s circular camera island is now co-branded “Leica,” with a coating that mitigates lens flare and improves image consistency. In addition, the rim is trimmed with 23-karat gold.

An unknown RGBW sensor powers the 32-megapixel selfie camera on the other side of the phone. The 12S Ultra is the first Android device to support Dolby Vision HDR video recording and playback (up to 4K at 60 frames per second). There are some cameras that also use an engine based on “HyperOIS” to produce more stable images. Adobe Labs calibrated 10-bit RAW files are available for the 12S series, and color correction metadata is embedded in the files for easy post-production with Adobe Lightroom.

According to Xiaomi, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra’s cooling mechanism is much better than traditional vapor chamber cooling found in recent flagship devices. Besides supporting playback, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra also records Dolby Vision HDR videos. In addition to the 50MP Sony IMX989 sensor, the camera has a 48MP Sony IMX586 wide-angle lens and a 48MP Sony periscope telephoto lens.
